Class Memories From 1973

I remember most about this: In 1973, my guy friends would not have to go to Vietnam, and they were the first group of high schoolers who did not have to serve in that unfortunate war. Occasionally, I'll teach a literature unit which uses the letters of soldiers in Vietnam for literature, and a large part of me grieves for the ones who didn't come home. We were spared that agony.

Mrs. Bullock, my junior English teacher, has left an indelible mark on me and my students. I was not a good student (lots of family issues), but Mrs. Bullock treated me and the other students with great respect. She was also deeply knowledgeable about literature and language, and her confidence in her ability to teach was smooth and strong. One day, at the beginning of my senior year, she stopped me in the hallway and said, "Margo, I wish you had taken my Shakespeare and Shaw class." I stammered some polite reply, but as I walked down the hallway, I thought, "She thinks I'm smart! She believes I am smart enough to take her high level class." Throughout my life, when I think I am unable to accomplish something, her words come back, and I persevere. As a gift to her, I look for opportunities to tell a student how smart or witty he or she is.

K.D. Benson was a strange duck. In fact, I had two history teachers there, and both were odd men. K.D. once made a sports bet with some boys in our senior history class: if he won, they had to do something (don't recall). If he lost the bet, he would buy them a case of beer. He lost. During class, the group of boys smugly asked if he was going to pay up. As we sat there during class, he told him he had the case of beer in the back of his car, and gave them the keys. He told them that whatever they did, not to open the back of the car in the parking lot. The boys left, and we watched with a mix of disgust and curiosity as he paced by the windows, and when he cried out, "OH GOD! NO! THEY OPENED THE TRUNK! I TOLD THEM NOT TO!" and he frantically wrung his hands. The boys drove off, and a couple of hours later, they brought his car back. We never asked about "the rest of the story" for that day, but anything "Katie" tried to teach us after that was not valued.

The following year, I was at the Ratskeller restaurant, and ran into two of the boys - both heavily intoxicated - and knew that Katie had contributed to these young men's struggle with alcohol.
